Sony’s Ohga, credited with developing CD, dies

TOKYO – Former Sony president and chairman Norio Ohga, credited with expanding the company from electronics hardware to software and entertainment and developing the compact disc, died Saturday at age 81.

Ohga, who led the company from 1982 to 1995, died of multiple organ failure in Tokyo, Sony said.

Some decisions made during Ohga’s presidency, such as the $3.4 billion purchase of Hollywood studios Columbia Pictures, were criticized as unwise and costly at the time. But Ohga’s focus on music, films and video games as a way to enrich the electronics business helped create Sony’s success in his era.

“We are always chasing after things that other companies won’t touch,” Ohga said in a 1998 interview with The Associated Press. “That is a big secret to our success.”

The flamboyant music connoisseur steered his work through his love of music. A former opera singer, Ohga insisted the CD be designed at 12 centimeters (4.8 inches) in diameter — or 75 minutes worth of music — to store Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in its entirety.

Shattering the stereotype of the staid Japanese executive, the debonair Ohga was never shy, his hair neatly slicked back, his boisterous mannerisms exuding the fiery yet naive air of an artist. His persona added a touch of glamour to Sony’s image at a time when Japan had global ambitions.

“It is no exaggeration to attribute Sony’s evolution beyond audio and video products into music, movies and game, and subsequent transformation into a global entertainment leader to Ohga-san’s foresight and vision,” Sony Corp. Chairman Howard Stringer said Saturday using the Japanese honorific.

The company started amid the destruction and poverty after World War II and built itself on the popularity of transistor radios, the Walkman, the Trinitron TV, the CD — shaping the history of modern electronics.

Sony has encountered difficulty in recent years, as it fell behind in flat-panel TVs to rivals like Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea, as well as in digital music players to Apple Inc.

Sony remains unique in having a Hollywood studio, a music recording business, and the PlayStation video-game unit, despite some critics’ complaints that it has never fully realized the benefits of owning both electronics and entertainment divisions.

Since about 2000, Ohga stopped being involved in Sony’s day-to-day business.

He is survived by his wife, Midori. Sony said a private wake will be held later.

Apple Says Samsung “Chose To Copy” iPhone and iPad, Sues Them

In Technology on April 19, 2011 at 4:58 am

Wowza. Think that Samsung’s Galaxy phones or Galaxy Tabs are a little bit too much like the iPhone and iPad? Apple agrees. So much so, in fact, that they’re taking Samsung to court over it.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple has just filed a suit against Samsung on the following basis:

“Rather than innovate and develop its own technology and a unique Samsung style for its smart phone products and computer tablets, Samsung chose to copy Apple’s technology, user interface and innovative style in these infringing products”

So, what does Apple want out of all of this? A bit of everything: an injunction (potentially preventing Samsung from manufacturing more Galaxy devices until the case is settled), damages (read: money), and, perhaps most importantly, being able to legally say “Yeah, Samsung totally copied us.”

The timeline, for those wondering: Apple’s first iPhone was released in 2007. By the time the second iPhone was released in 2008, the series was already quite clearly a hit. In 2010, Samsung released the Galaxy S — which, while Android-powered, was running a custom user-interface (TouchWiz) that certainly does bear a stronger resemblance to iOS than the stock Android skin does. In April of 2010, Apple released the original iPad; Samsung’s Galaxy Tab was announced in September of that year.

It’ll be incredibly interesting to watch how this case goes, as it sets a rather important precedent. We’re moving beyond enforcing patents on specific ideas here, and into the realm of simply shouting “Hey, they copied us!” when competition starts to heat up. While Apple certainly made the idea of displaying a grid of icons on a slab of glass popular, it’s not a novel one. Once that idea has been done once, there are only so many unique ways to do it.

Also interesting: Samsung makes part of the iPhone and the iPad. Samsung has supplied the processors for Apple’s mobile devices from the very beginning, from the S5L8900 in the original iPhone to the A5 in the iPad 2.

Lakers C Andrew Bynum hyperextends right knee

In Sports on April 13, 2011 at 4:53 am
LOS ANGELES (AP)—Lakers center Andrew Bynum(notes) hyperextended his right knee during the second quarter of Los Angeles’ game against San Antonio on Tuesday night, a potentially serious blow to the Lakers’ hopes for a third straight NBA title.

(Getty Images)

Bynum was hurt midway through the second quarter when he stepped on the foot of Spurs big man DeJuan Blair(notes) while getting back on defense. Bynum awkwardly tumbled to the court and briefly stayed down before walking under his own power to the locker room.

Bynum won’t travel with the Lakers to Wednesday night’s season finale at Sacramento, team spokesman John Black said. The center will have an MRI on Wednesday morning.

Any significant absence for Bynum could be a major problem for the two-time defending NBA champion Lakers, who had lost their last five games before taking on the Spurs.

Bynum is averaging 11.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and nearly 2 blocked shots in 54 games this season while patrolling the paint as the Lakers’ most important defensive player. The 23-year-old’s imposing size alongside fellow 7-footer Pau Gasol(notes) is the Lakers’ biggest asset outside Kobe Bryant(notes), and Bynum is in the midst of a remarkable defensive season.

But Bynum missed the first 24 games of the regular season following offseason surgery on his troublesome right knee, and he has a long history of problems with both knees. He took one game off in February to rest a bone bruise in his left knee.

He had surgery on his left knee in 2008 after dislocating his kneecap, keeping him out for 47 regular-season games and the first of Los Angeles’ three straight runs to the NBA finals. The Lakers lost to Boston in the 2008 finals without Bynum, but they’ve won the last two championship series with Bynum in uniform.

Bynum also partially tore the meniscus in his right knee last season, but postponed surgery until summer to start all 23 playoff games in the Lakers’ championship run—and to make a trip to the World Cup in South Africa.

The Lakers struggled in the first half against the Spurs, who rested Tim Duncan(notes)Manu Ginobili(notes) andTony Parker(notes) with the top seed in the Western Conference playoffs already wrapped up.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Dennis Rodman has been voted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Rodman says he was informed Thursday to be in Houston for Sunday’s announcement.

The five-time NBA champion and two-time defensive player of the year was honored Friday night by the Detroit Pistons, who retired his No. 10 jersey, during halftime of their game against the Chicago Bulls.

Rodman was among 12 finalists for the Hall of Fame this year along with players such as Jamaal Wilkes, Maurice Cheeks, Chris Mullin and Ralph Sampson. The induction ceremony is in August.

Detroit selected Rodman in the second round of the 1986 draft of Southeastern Oklahoma. The native of Trenton, N.J., also played for Chicago, San Antonio, the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas.

Defending Gadhafi, Farrakhan Warns America: ‘It’s over, Baby. It’s Over!’

*Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan continued Thursday in his role as Moammar Gadhafi’s only outspoken friend in the United States.

Even Gadhafi’s own ambassador to the United Nations has denounced him, comparing the Libyan leader to former Cambodian strongman Pol Pot.

But Farrakhan told a packed house at his Chicago headquarters that he considered Gadhafi a brother, and that if there was any “gangster” on the world stage, it was the United States.

“I don’t care what Gadhafi has done wrong. He’s not the mad dog of the Middle East,” Farrakhan thundered. “The mad dogs are growling and biting in Washington, D.C.

Facebook sued for $1 billion over Intifada page

– 1 hr 28 mins ago

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Facebook and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg have been hit with a lawsuit seeking more than $1 billion in damages over a page on the social network which called for a “Third Intifada” against Israel.

Facebook this week shut down the “Third Intifada” page, which had almost 500,000 fans, but the lawsuit filed in a court here claims that the social network showed “negligence” by not quickly responding to appeals to remove the page.

Besides awarding damages, the complaint calls on the court to bar Facebook “from allowing the Facebook page titled ‘Third Palestinian Intifada,’ and other related and similar sites, which advocate violence and death to Jews.”

The suit, a copy of which was obtained by technology blog TechCrunch, was filed in DC Superior Court by Larry Klayman, who describes himself in the complaint as “an American citizen of Jewish origin” who is “active in matters concerning the security of Israel and all people.”

Klayman also identifies himself as the founder of Freedom Watch, whose website describes it as a political advocacy group dedicated to protecting privacy, free speech and other rights and “our national sovereignty against the incompetent, terrorist state-controlled United Nations.”

Facebook dismissed the case as “without merit” and said it would fight.

“While we haven’t been served with a complaint, we believe the case is without merit and we will fight it vigorously,” a Facebook spokesman said.

Facebook shut down the page on Tuesday, several days after Israeli Public Diplomacy Minister Yuli Edelstein sent a letter to Zuckerberg urging him to remove it.

Facebook said the page was initially tolerated because it “began as a call for peaceful protest” but direct calls for violence began appearing and the page was removed for violating Facebook’s policies.
