Some Black Churches Rally Around Obama’s Job Plan, Petition Congress For More Black Jobs

Disgruntled clergy and healthcare leaders have launched a nationwide petition campaign in churches calling for the Congress and the private business sector to support President Obama’s embattled jobs program. At the same time, they are also urging the creation of thousands of new employment opportunities for minorities in the pharmaceutical, insurance and other private industries.
Clergy and Providers for Racial Healthcare Equality (CPRHE) announced the initiatives in mid-September at its “Save the Presidency of Barack Obama” gathering and town hall meeting in Harlem.
The campaign was part of the kickoff of a national petition drive aimed at reducing the excessive 16 percent unemployment rate among blacks. The national average unemployment rate hovers above nine percent.
At the meeting, 125 persons from the New York area signed petitions to be submitted to the Congress. CPRHE said it hopes to present thousands of other petitions, mostly from churches, within the next two months to the Congress in order to gain support for the President’s jobs bill.
“We are asking members of the Congress, the pharmaceutical, the insurance and the healthcare industry at large to commit themselves to reduce the unemployment rate among African Americans and other people of color,” declared Rev. Dr. Clyde Anderson, executive director of CPRHE, a healthcare and religious civil rights organization.
“We are also asking church leaders and their congregations around the country to support the reelection of President Obama,” he said.
“If there is to be any progress with respect jobs creation and social justice for minorities, we must reelect the President.
“We believe that arch-conservative Republicans and tea partiers are determined to oust the President as well as the Democratically-controlled Senate,” he explained.
Anderson added: “It does not matter to them whether he is a great or effective president or not. They simply want him out of office so that they can continue to do their dastardly deeds.”
The four-point petition, which will be submitted to the Congress in late fall, calls on the Congress and the private sector to take the following actions:
• Pass Obama’s “American Jobs Act of 2011” in order to reduce the high unemployment rate among blacks, Latinos, Native peoples and other minorities.
• Pressure private industry–namely the pharmaceutical and insurance companies–to establish manufacturing and other plants in American minority areas rather than overseas to provide new jobs, as well as halt the future layoffs of them.
• Demand that Fortune 500 companies create a major new program to award contracts to minority-owned businesses, which will in turn be required to dramatically increase the percentage of minorities to their work force
• Mandate that all branches of the government cease doing business with private companies found guilty of engaging in discriminatory practices against minorities. These businesses include hospitals, clinics and others receiving moneys from Medicare, Medicaid and other governmental programs.

Google+ Games are a Go

Google+ may open its doors to the public on July 31… with its gaming platform intact.
Thursday brought news via Facebook that Google’s new social service will throw open the doors to the entire public on July 31, 2011. At this point, the news is merely rumor, as this particular Facebook page isn’t officially sanctioned by Google. We also haven’t seen anything pop up from Google employees on Google+ itself.

“Google plus in beta reaches 18 million users,” the Facebook page reads. “At this rate, it will be around 100 million in 3 months. But the growth rate is expected to rise when the site goes public on 31st July.”

The Wall Street Journal spouts a different number than the unofficial Google+ Facebook page, reporting that the social site has already reeled in 20 million users… and it’s not even open to the public. The number stems from an estimate provided by web-traffic watcher comScore Inc. on Wednesday and includes the 5 million users planted in the United States.

“I’ve never seen anything grow this quickly,” said Andrew Lipsman, vice president of industry analysis at comScore. He added that the only other site that has accumulated as many new visitors in a short period of time is Twitter in 2009, but that happened over several months. Google+ has been in invite-only mode for only three weeks.

According to the paper, comScore produced its 20 million estimate by using a similar approach Nielsen utilizes to measure television ratings. Thus, rather than relying on actual hard data piped in from Google, the estimate was made based on a “global measurement panel” of two million Internet users.

As for the July 31 date, there may be more involved than simply going public with Google+. Various reports are indicating that Google may actually launch its gaming platform on that date based on a Google+ help page which for a short time mentioned gaming. Unfortunately, the company has removed any hints since initial reports surfaced, but apparently previously read that “if you’re looking for updates shared from games, check out your Games stream.”

Why Girls Love Google+ Too

In Technology on July 27, 2011 at 3:48 am

Google+ seemed like a boys club at first, but recent estimates point to a growing number of women using the Internet search giant’s social networking service.
Just this week, Paul Allen of FamilyLink and Ancestry.com fame said a third of Google+ users are now female.
That’s a big jump from previous guesses that put the percentage at a quarter, a tenth or even less. Allen’s estimates, which use census data and statistics on the frequency of certain last names occurring within the overall U.S. population, have proven to be surprisingly accurate. Previously, Allen correctly predicted that total Google+ users would soon exceed 10 million.
“The poster of 18 men in a hot tub that has been passed around for the past week or two is not reflective of reality and is not what Google+ is going to end up being,” Allen wrote on Google+.
But even if Allen’s numbers are right, the percentage of Google+ users who are female would still lag the percentage of users of other popular social networking sites who are female.
A Pew report puts the split of Twitter users at 64 percent female. Pew says MySpace and Facebook also have 57 percent and 58 percent female users, respectively. Only LinkedIn has a male majority, with just 37 percent female users.
One theory on the dearth of women on Google+ has to do with the nature of the field test.

New Mexico School Suspends Students for Sharing Bible Verses

In National News on July 19, 2011 at 3:16 pm
jelly-donuts.jpgRelentless. That’s how some might describe the Roswell Independent School District. That’s because the New Mexico system appears to be on a mission to squash the Word of God on its campuses, according to a lawsuit Liberty Counselfiled. The suit alleges the Roswell Independent School District retaliated against a Christian group called Relentless, punishing and suspending its members for buying and giving fresh Krispy Kreme doughnuts with Bible verses to each of their teachers. The students went to great lengths to share the Word of God. The closest Krispy Kreme shop was in Texas. Some members of the group drove almost six hours round trip, stayed overnight, got up at 3 a.m., filled their car’s back seat with fresh doughnuts and got back to school on time to deliver the doughnuts. When they handed out the doughnuts, a Scripture verse was included. One student was immediately sent home and two others were forced to spend a Saturday morning sitting alone in the classroom for four hours as a punishment. “Some teachers are worried about their students giving them bullets, and this school suspends students over a Bible verse! These students are living their Christian beliefs by showing kindness,” says Mathew Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel and dean of Liberty University School of Law. “It is outrageous that the Roswell school officials are mean to these students solely because they are hostile to their Christian faith.” Click here to read more Source: Charisma Magazine

Poll: Majority of Americans Say Church Presence Is Positive for Their Community

In National News on July 14, 2011 at 11:24 am

savior-image1.jpg

Most Americans believe the presence of a church is positive for their community, a new study reveals.
In fact, more than half (53 percent) say the church’s presence is “very” positive and a quarter say it’s “somewhat” positive, the Barna Group found. Only five percent hold an unfavorable view of the church’s influence on the community, saying its presence is negative.
Though the younger cohort (those aged 18 to 27) along with atheists, the unchurched and liberals are least likely to hold a favorable view of the church, the new study found that still a majority in each group, except atheists and agnostics, believe the church has a generally positive influence on their communities.
“Churches are perceived to be an important element of a community, even among the unchurched,” said David Kinnaman, president of the Barna Group, in the report released Wednesday. “This positive view is partly due to the fact that most unchurched adults are de-churched, or former churchgoers. So, although they may be wary of personal involvement, they have an understanding of the service and assistance that churches can provide to their communities.”
He also observed that most Americans who have no religious affiliation or belief “are not overtly hostile to churches.”
“Their response is better characterized as benign indifference.”

Google ‘to launch social network in May’

In Technology on March 16, 2011 at 3:13 am

Google will launch a social network, possibly called Google Circles, at its Google I/O conference in May, according to technology blog The Next Web.

By Shane RichmondThe blog made the claim on Friday but it gathered ground over the weekend after the Read/Write Web blog claimed that the service would launch at the South By Southwest conference in Austin, Texas.

Google is holding several events at SXSW but quickly dismissed the rumour that it would launch anything at all at the conference. “We don’t have any product announcements today,” the company said. Word quickly went round that “Google doesn’t launch products at other people’s events” but that didn’t stop the topic trending on Twitter locally for several hours.

The Next Web, a respected technology blog, repeated its claim that Google’s social service would launch in May. Asked whether that was the case, a Google spokesperson said: “We do not comment on rumour and speculation.”

Social media has long been seen as Google’s weak spot, though Marissa Mayer was keen to point out, in her presentation here on Friday, that the company delivers social recommendations through its location-based services at the moment and has plans to go further.

Nevertheless, the company’s reputation for being deficient in this area persists and the growing power of Facebook in particular means that it’s an area Google needs to address.

At Google I/O last year, the company launched Google TV. Google Wave, a collaboration service that the company has since closed, was launched at Google I/O in 2009.
